Clay tablets
The Hittites had their own hieroglyphic writing system which they used on seals
and rock reliefs but otherwise mainly on perishable materials. They also adopted
the cuneiform script of Mesopotamia for writing on clay tablets and these have
survived. Many have been found in the royal archives on the citadel of the
Hittite capital of Hattusa (now Bogazkoy). They include administrative records,
historical and mythological texts, and word-lists in other languages.
