Celtic Cross, in the Graiguenamanagh churchyard, commemorating the Hughes family with an insert for Captain Christopher James Hughes of the 4th Battalion, Connaught Rangers.

He was educated at Clongowes Wood College (Clane, Co. Kildare) and gazetted to the 3rd Battalion of the Connaught Rangers in 1901. During 1902 he served with the Highland Light Infantry in South Africa during the Second Boer War. On 15th Feb 1916 a draft of 3 Officers and 110 other ranks were sent from France to replace casualties within the 1st Battalion in Mesopotamia (modern Iraq) and this included Hughes.

He died 13th May 1916 while on active service, possibly resulting from the relief and Battle for Kut. He was 33 years old and is listed on the Basra War Memorial, Iraq.
