Romanesque doorway which gave access from the west range into the Cloister. Above the doorway are a later addition, 14th century, of two shields representing the Douglas Arms (a heart and three stars) with a niche for a statue. Archibald, earl of Douglas, known as ‘Archibald the Grim’ or ‘Black Archibald’ became the Abbey's patron during the 14th century. He was said to have done so much for the abbey that he was regarded as Sweetheart’s second founder. Cistercian Abbey at Sweetheart, Dumfries and Galloway, Scotland.
