The Alfred Jewel, a strong symbol of the Anglo Saxon civilization. It takes it's name form the inscription running around the frame - AELRED MEC HEHT GEWYRCAN - Alfred ordered me to be made. Generally agreed to refer to Alfred the Great who died in 899 AD. It is made from rock crystal, enamel and granulated gold work.
