St Catherine of Alexandria Panel by Vittorio Crivelli, Venice 1444/1449 - Fermo 1501/1502. Once part of the upper tier of a large alter-piece which was probably painted for the church of St Francesco at Monte Santo in 1491-3. St Catherine is crowned and richly dressed, as befits her royal birth, she carries a book - a reference to her erudition, a martyr's palm and a spiked wheel which recalls the carious attempts made to execute her. Vittorio Crivelli aimed for a richness of effect in his art, with a meticulous attention to detail.
