Tombstone of a Valerius Paternus dating to the 1st/2nd century AD. He served as a Speculator in the Roman army in Britain before returning to Rome on his retirement. Speculators were part of the Governor's staff and ten men from each legion were selected in each province to serve in this role. Their task was primarily judicial and included the custody and execution of prisoners, also the delivery of dispatches to Rome.
