Mace-head dating to the Naqada I period. The population of Naqada gradually increased in Upper Egypt around the major sites of the period are Naqada, Diospolos Parva, El Amra, Mahasna, Hierakonpolis, Qau el Kebir and Badrari. Most of these were villages but Naqada and Hierakonpolis were towns - in their cemeteries were mainly oval but some rectangular pits exist. New weapons appeared in this period - such as this disc shaped mace-head, which would have had a wooden or possibly an ivory shaft. The mace-heads were of a hard stone like diorite or breccia. This type of mace was a weapon of war and is characteristic of the period - the injury inflicted by this weapon would have been severe and it's general design can be found in many cultures.
