Picture 161

Head of Amun
c.1336-1327 BC, 18th Dynasty, Reign of Tutankhamun

The braided beard and the distinctive headdress, which was once surmounted by two plumes, identifies this as the god Amun.

The features of the face suggest that it was commissioned during the reign of Tutankhamun, maybe as part of the restoration of Amun's monuments that were destroyed or defaced during the reign of Akhenaten (Amenhotep IV).
